A Walk of Faith

During most of the year, the Jordan River was about one hundred feet wide; but during the spring flood season, the river overflowed the banks and became a mile wide. This is the very river that God had told Joshua to cross in order to get into the Promised Land of Canaan.

Remember when Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt, a picture of believers being delivered from sin? Moses lifted his rod to the sea and the wind began to blow and the waters parted. God’s power opened the Red Sea and the people crossed over on dry ground.

God’s plan for the Israelites to cross the Jordan was different. He instructed the priests to carry the Ark of the Covenant before the people into the Jordan. This time as soon as the priests stepped into the river, the water stopped flowing and stood like a wall twenty miles upstream. It was not the obedient arm of a leader (like Moses) that opened the waters, but it was the obedient feet of the people trusting in God.

When we step out by faith (Joshua 1:3) and “get our feet wet”, we are more likely to make progress in living for Christ and serving Him. Remember that the crossing of the Red Sea is a picture of the unbeliever being delivered from sin and the crossing of the Jordan is the picture of the believer claiming the inheritance in Christ.
