The wages of Sin
Joshua chapter 6 depicts the conquest of Jericho and the first of many victories in the new land. There was, however, something hanging over the heads of the Israelites. The sin of one man caused the Israelites to lose their next battle at Ai. Joshua 6:17- And the city shall be under the ban, it and all that is in it belongs to the Lord. 18-But as for you, only keep yourselves from the things under the ban, lest you covet them and take some of the things under the ban, so you would make the camp of Israel accursed and bring trouble on it.
God told Joshua to destroy Jericho but to not take any of the spoils of war. One man, Achan, from the tribe of Judah did so and caused Israel to lose the battle of Ai. Joshua 7:11- Israel has sinned and they have also transgressed My covenant which I commanded them, and they have even taken some of the things under the ban and have both stolen and deceived. 12- Therefore the sons of Israel cannot stand before their enemies; they turn their backs before their enemies, for they have become accursed. I will not be you anymore unless you destroy the things under the ban from your midst.
Joshua and all Israel with him took Achan and his family and all that he had taken during the fall of Jericho. Joshua 7:25- And all Israel stoned them with stones; and they burned them with fire after they had stoned them with stones.
Fortunately for the believer, our sins have been covered by the blood of Jesus. 1 John 1:9- If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
