The Hard Sayings of Jesus

Matthew 5:29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

Jesus said this during the blessings or Beatitudes in the latter part of the Sermon on the Mount. He says this right after His declaration in verse 28; But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. We are here taught, that there is such a thing as heart-adultery, adulterous thoughts and dispositions. Whosoever looketh on a woman (not only another man's wife, as some would have it, but any woman), to
lust after her, has committed adultery with her in his heart.

In this first attempt of teaching the hard sayings of Jesus, I would like to let this saying be commented on by anyone who would like to give their interpretation of verse 29. You can read from any version that you have. Comments are welcome.

1 Comments:

i do not believe Jesus is advocating self-mutilation as an act of faithfulness, but emphasizing through the severity of the exampled actions, the need to separate ourselves from that which will ultimately separate us from God.
things in our lives and lifestyles that minister to sin, whether they be our addictions or our treatment of our fellow humans, must be removed.
